Rochester Bicycling Club

Membership Has Its Privileges

Riding with a Group
It's all about riding, right? Enjoy riding with others who share your interest in cycling.  Meet new friends.  Improve your cycling skills by riding with more experienced riders.  We have a wealth of cycling information, you just have to ask!  Discover new places to ride and explore.  We have something for everyone!

Health & Fitness
Cycling is a great aerobic exercise.  You are more likely to get out on your bike if you can ride with a group.  The more you ride the fitter you get.  Cycling is a great way to burn off those holiday pounds we all put on.

Over 400 Scheduled Rides
You can find the latest riding season calendar on the website.  Weekend rides run from March through November, and weekday evening rides run all summer long. In addition to our regular calendar we offer Impromptu rides which are scheduled up to just a day in advance.   If you find a favorite ride(s) that you would like to lead next year, you can contact the Ride Director to place it on the calendar.

Over 400 Mapped Bike Routes
Most of our ride maps are digitally drawn and illustrated pdf documents. Many routes also have cue sheets and gpx files associated with them. All this is available in Members Only Area.  The rides vary from less than ten miles for novices, or those with limited time to ride, to 100 or more mile tests for the dedicated. There are plenty of flatter riding areas close to the coast of Lake Ontario, but the glaciers left us plenty of challenging climbs in the south. The ride designers have been able to link some of the nicest roads together into really "interesting" rides. In between are short, medium and long; flat, moderate and hilly rides, something for everyone!

Ride with GPS
Coming in 2017, you will have *free* access to Ride With GPS for RBC's club routes and routes shared by RBC members. Among other features, this provides visual and audible turn-by-turn directions for our routes right from your smartphone! GPX/TCX files are also available for Garmin and other GPS/fitness devices.

Clinics and workshops
Each year we conduct clinics on such topics as basic bike maintenance and repair or how to fix a flat. Check out the Clinics calendar  for dates, times, and places.

Bike Shop Discounts
Rochester has a lot of great bike shops, and they're REALLY great for offering RBC members discounts on new bikes, clothing, parts, service and accessories! We produce a list of discounts offered by local shops. Show your RBC membership card at checkout and make big savings. Frequently, shopping at supporting bike shops pays for your membership just in savings alone! If you ride a bike, it PAYS to be a member, and it PAYS to support your LOCAL bike shop!

Member Forums
The Member Forum is an online discussion of anything cycling related.  This is where you can share information of interest to other cyclists or ask questions.  Members can place cycling related classified ads.

Website Members Only Area
As a member you will have access to the Members Only Area of the web site. This is where you will find our extensive map collection.  Also here is the Member Directory and Club Documents.  In the Members Directory  you can opt to have your contact information available and you can look-up and contact other club members. Finally the Members Area is where the club documents are found, such as the Bike Shop Discounts.

Club Newsletter
The RBC produces the Flower City Cyclist, the newsletter of the Rochester Bicycling Club, 10 issues each year. Members receive an email with a link to the latest issue. Past issues are available on the website.  Members are encouraged to submit articles, event information, and bike related for sale items for inclusion. Contact the Newsletter Editor for details.

Bike Case Rental
The RBC owns several hard shell bike travel cases that members can rent for a small fee. See the rental agreement form on the Club Documents page for details.

Special Events:

Spring Awards Banquet - We kick off the riding season in mid-March with a short afternoon ride followed by a dish-to-pass banquet and the annual Awards presentation. We hand out awards for riding accomplishments as well as fun awards for those humorous moments that always crop up when hundreds of cyclists gather throughout the season. Lots of fun - Don't Miss It!

Andrew Spiller Memorial Challenge Ride and Picnic - Each summer, we have a picnic of a grand scale. We rent a rural park, bring a dish-to-pass, set up multiple variable length loops, and start (optionally) riding as soon as 7:00am Saturday, and (optionally) riding as late as 7:00am ... THE NEXT MORNING! At this event, members have a perfect opportunity to just come out and eat, or eat and ride a loop or two, or eat, ride, eat, ride, eat and ride as long and as far as they want. Many members have done their first ever 50 mile, 100 mile, 200 mile (and longer!) ride at this event. Where else can you strive for a personal best under such well supported (and fun) conditions? More information here.
Volunteer Dinner - This special event/benefit goes out to all those members who volunteer just a small bit of time each year to help the club in any of a number of functions. Leading Rides, contributing articles for the newsletter, and working with publicity at a local festival are all examples of things that members do and earn a free pass to the catered dinner held in October. But Wait! There's More! Volunteers also win a ticket for a door prize given by local bike shops and other supporting businesses.
Fall Elections & Party - This event wraps up the riding season with yet another food fiesta. This event is mostly a social gathering for riding buddies to meet off-bike to chat and laugh about the closing season, but it's also the one (very short) and only general membership business meeting of the RBC each year. We elect the slate of officers for the coming ride season and swiftly push them off to get the next year ready for the club. The ride schedule for the following year is already in development by this time, so this is also an opportunity to get an early look at it, make suggestions and requests, and even sign up to lead your favorite rides!
Winter Multimedia Show - What cool trip did someone take on their bike this last year? What cool trip did YOU take on YOUR bike this last year? Here's the chance to share your adventure with others. We used to call this a the Winter Slideshow, but these days, everything is electronic, big-screen, and in Hi-Fidelity! Come join us for one or more travelogues and start dreaming about YOUR next big bike adventure!
